If you love the idea of trekking the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, in search for the magnificent mountain gorillas that reside there, this fabulous 4-Day Itinerary could be the perfect trip for you. Short enough to add-on to any other African travel itinerary, such as a Kilimanjaro Expedition, a Safari in the Serengeti, or a beach break in Zanzibar, yet long enough to highlight the very best of Uganda’s most famous national park, this really is a trip of a lifetime…
DAY 1: Arrive Kigali – Transfer to Uganda
The closest international airport to Bwindi National Park is Kigali Airport in Rwanda. Crossing the border is easy here (providing you have the right paperwork), and you’ll arrive at your luxurious lodge overlooking Lake Mutanda in just over 3 hours. The rest of the day is at leisure.
DAY 2: Gorilla Tracking Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Today is the day you have been dreaming of, and after an early breakfast, you will make you way to Bwindi in preparation for your first encounter with the rare mountain gorillas that call the Pearl of Africa home. While not exactly ‘impenetrable’, Bwindi Forest is a dense rainforest that homes mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, 5 other primate species, 113 mammal species, over 200 butterfly species and 360 species of birds. 10 gorilla families live in the national park, and when you are lucky enough to find one of them (which could take several hours), you’ll spend up to 2 hours with them, before leaving them in peace and heading back to the hotel.
DAY 3: Second Day Gorilla Tracking or Alternative Activities
While most visitors prefer to spend at least 2 days tracking the Gorillas, costly gorilla permits ($600 per person per day), may limit you to just one day. But worry not! There are numerous other activities available in the region, such as the Batwa Trail, Golden Monkey Trekking in Mgahinga National Park, Volcano Climbing, and Boat Trips on Lake Mutanda.
DAY 4: City Tour Kigali – Departure
All good things must come to an end, and flight time permitting, you can take a city tour of Rwanda’s capital Kigali, visiting the genocide memorial and the presidential palace. Your tour will end at the airport, where you will return home with wonderful memories, or continue to your next African destination!
